Review: Apocalypse Now Now

Apocalypse Now Now by Charlie Human was an interesting read. His main character Baxter has a group of friends, collectively called the Spider, that distribute porn around the school. His gang and the other gangs seem to be handling business and he is dating a girl dame Esme. Then his girlfriend goes missing. Around the time they are all these murders by the Mountain Man killer who carves an eye on his victims. He hires Jackson ‘Jackie’ Ronin who is a paranormal investigator to help find her.

Baxter is a bit of an arrogant and manipulative kid. It is not really until his girlfriend disappears that we learn he has ‘feels’ at all. He and Ronin get into the supernatural world and he gets dragged into it, opening his mind to a whole new view on things.

Every once in a while we hear the side of Baxter’s Psychologist and that is ingenious. Loved how that was put into the book. Baxter himself sometimes questions his sanity due to these South African mythical dreams he has. However, his plot with the girlfriend was rather predictable. I was amazed at the time, neither character, thought to even check Esme out when he encountered her the first time. Nevertheless, we learn more about what is really going on and what needs to be done. The loose threads, or tentacles I suppose, come to be tied in.

It does keep you engaged. And it is nice to see a character evolve the way Baxter does.

I’d give it 4/5
